Speaking Test Structure

The speaking test is divided into three parts, each testing different aspects of your spoken English.

Part 1: Introduction & Interview

4-5 min

Answer general questions about yourself, your home, work, studies, and interests. This lasts 4-5 minutes.

Give extended answers (2-3 sentences)
Use a variety of vocabulary
Speak naturally and confidently
Don't memorise answers

Part 2: Long Turn

3-4 min

Speak for 1-2 minutes on a given topic card. You have 1 minute to prepare. This tests your ability to speak at length.

Use the 1 minute to make notes
Structure your talk (intro → body → conclusion)
Keep speaking even if you make a mistake
Cover all points on the cue card

Part 3: Discussion

4-5 min

A deeper discussion on topics related to Part 2. The examiner asks abstract questions requiring analysis and opinion.

Give balanced views on issues
Support opinions with examples
Use discourse markers to organize thoughts
Engage with the examiner's questions
